The Museum of Australian Democracy acknowledges the traditional owners and custodians of country throughout Australia. We recognise their continuing connection to land, waters and community. We pay our respects to the people, the cultures and the elders past, present and emerging.

The museum respectfully acknowledges the role that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples continue to play in shaping Australia’s democracy.

MoAD is thrilled to present a FREE family-friendly theatre experience as a part of the Enlighten Festival for eight nights from Saturday 3 March to Saturday 10 March 2012.

The short play Shadow Boy will star Andy Minh Trieu from the Channel 9 children’s cooking show Kitchen Whiz. The play is written by award-winning writer Alana Valentine.

Andy plays Sebbie, a little boy home alone on the 31 December 1900, the night before Commonwealth Day in Sydney. It’s pouring with rain and Sebbie’s mother and father, who have been constructing the Federation celebration arches, go out in the storm to protect them.

Sebbie is worried that the storm will undo the wonderful work that he has seen his parents do in the construction and decoration of the archways. To assuage his fears, Sebbie decides to conjure up an audience full of imaginary friends. By building the arches with his new friends in his bedroom, he will keep his family safe from the storm and wind.

Come to the museum to become one of Sebbie’s imaginary friends, learn about Federation and how communities made Federation arches that symbolised the birth of nationhood. You will also be able to make a paper lantern to help celebrate Federation and learn about our wonderful Illuminations artwork inspired by the Federation arches and created by master glass artist Wendy Fairclough.

As an extra treat on Friday 2, Saturday 3, Friday 9 and Saturday 10, our museum and other nearby buildings will have images projected onto the facades at 8pm as part of the Enlighten Festival, a lovely way to explore the cultural heritage of our nation. Don’t miss this special performance.

Nanette has been the Community Learning Officer at the museum since August 2011. She spends her time organising events like the ANU Debating Society Grand Final and writing school holiday programs. Currently she’s involved in the implementation of a Disability Action Plan for the museum and loves the idea that MoAD is becoming such an exciting and socially inclusive place to be. In her spare time Nanette is happiest with either a camera or guitar in her hands.
