From the oral history collection: Marcie Cowell (1930-2011)
Marcie Cowell (nee Johnson) was born at Candelo, NSW, in 1930. Her parents moved to Bombala in 1938 where they ran the local newspaper, ‘Bombala Times’. Marcie helped out at the newspaper while training as a telephonist at the Bombala Post Office. In 1946, she moved to Canberra and worked as a telephonist for six months at Parliament House.
In this edited excerpt from an interview in the Oral History collection, Mrs Cowell talks about the nature of her work on the switchboards.
The interview was recorded in 2004 by Diana Tapscott. The full interview is not currently available online but is available upon request at the Museum of Australian Democracy. Please contact the museum prior to your visit and quote the reference number OHI 70.
