Thanks to The Canberra Times and ABC 666 spreading the word, we have found out more about the Julia Gillard/Tony Abbott T-shirt!
The donor tells us the wedding was held in the Queanbeyan Registry Office, with a reception at the Hyatt Hotel Canberra. The reception was small, around 10 people. The couple wanted to capitalise on the lead-up to the 2010 election, being strong Labor supporters, so had these T-shirts designed and printed locally. They took them to the reception and asked guests to wear them for some photos. There was no obligation to wear them, and photos were duly taken. After the reception the bride and groom headed off on their honeymoon, but first called into the Kitchen Cabinet at the museum to stock up on supplies for their trip. That’s where they had their encounter with museum staff and the groom handed over his T-shirt.
The bride had a strong connection to Old Parliament House, having been a waitress here in the 1970s, and then as a NSW Labor adviser came here regularly for meetings in the 1980s. She told us that the museum was her favourite and that she loved the building! She was delighted she was able to contribute to our collection.
The museum would like to thank the ABC and The Canberra Times for helping us find out more about this distinctive item from our collection.
