In June, the irrepressible Barnaby Joyce successfully defeated Michael McCormack in a partyroom vote for the Nationals leadership — and the Deputy Prime Minister’s position. Joyce had previously held the leadership position but had resigned amid scandal in 2018. Rather than a reflection on his performance, McCormack felt it was a case that ‘someone wanted their old job back’.
