El Dorado

Johannes Leak compares the government’s search for extra revenue to help fund its election promises with the search for El Dorado, the mythical city of gold that the Spanish conquistadors searched in vain for in the New World. One idea floated by Labor during the campaign was to double the rate of tax paid on super fund earnings for accounts with balances above $3 million and apply this to unrealised capital gains.
