The Museum of Australian Democracy acknowledges the traditional owners and custodians of country throughout Australia. We recognise their continuing connection to land, waters and community. We pay our respects to the people, the cultures and the elders past, present and emerging.

The museum respectfully acknowledges the role that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples continue to play in shaping Australia’s democracy.

    Back in the Pilbara

It’s great to be back in the Pilbara once more.

To see the people again that I have been photographing and collaborating with for five years now is very special to me.

I realised how fast time has passed when I met Kelman Tullock in South Hedland again. Back in 2007 he was a shy little boy - now he is taller than me and a confident young man.

It is also very moving to meet new people in the communities and have the privilege to hear their stories. In Warralong we had the opportunity to share some time with Monty Hale (Minyjun) who just recently published his book ‘Kurlumarniny - we come from the desert’ which is written in Nyangumarta and English.

I can’t wait to get on the road to Yandeyarra - there are so many people to meet, stories to hear and adventures to be had…

Since his arrival from Germany in 2001 Tobias has had a keen interest in Australian Indigenous issues. He has travelled within Australia extensively and has worked with Indigenous communities in Western Australia, Arnhem Land and Victoria. These projects have lead to numerous Photography Awards and Exhibitions. Tobias has been involved in the Marnti warajanga – a walk together project since 2007. On regular trips over the years he has established close relationships with communities and organisations in the Pilbara.
