Billy Hughes at war

Learn about the First World War, from conscription to peace negotiations.

Prime Minister Billy Hughes led Australia through most of the First World War, serving as prime minister from 1915 to 1923. One of Australia's most notable characters, Hughes was complex and controversial, inspiring admiration and strong dislike in equal measure.

Hughes's views sometimes seemed to conflict. He was dedicated to the survival of the British Empire. But at the same time, he promoted and fought for Australian national interests.

Two of the major issues Hughes faced as prime minister during the First World War were the conscription referendums of 1916 and 1917, and the peace negotiations.

In this resource, explore the conscription debate by analysing political cartoons, hearing arguments for and against it, and working through activities in the workbook. Then read about Hughes's role in the First World War peace treaty negotiations held at Versailles in France.
